The cult series “Buffy – Under the Spell of Demons” is to receive a sequel. Leading actress Sarah Michelle Gellar is also set to return.
There are films and series that are simply cult. They are talked about, and even years after their release, fans remain loyal to them, and they are mentioned in other media. One such series is undoubtedly Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The stories about the eponymous vampire slayer were created between 1997 and 2003 and made lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and series creator Joss Whedon stars in Hollywood. As is now circulating, a belated Buffy sequel is possibly in the works.
Belated “Buffy” Sequel Likely Headed to Disney+
The US industry magazine Variety, among others, reports that a corresponding project is being planned. According to the report, a belated Buffy sequel is nearing approval for the production of a pilot episode. Sarah Michelle Gellar is said to be in final talks for her return.
It is still too early for a start date and an exact cast list. However, it is already known that the Buffy sequel will be produced by US streaming service Hulu. Since Hulu is part of the Disney Group, an exclusive release on Disney+ in Germany seems likely.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Will Probably Not Play the Lead Role
Details about the content are scarce at the moment. Nevertheless, there is already initial information that a new female vampire hunter will take center stage. However, the actress who will embody this new character has not yet been announced. Sarah Michelle Gellar will, therefore, no longer play the lead role, although she is set to appear in front of the cameras in a recurring part.
In addition, Gellar will take on a role behind the scenes as an executive producer. Chloé Zhao is currently set to direct the pilot episode. Zhao won two Oscars in 2021 for her film Nomadland in the Best Film and Best Director categories. She also directed a major Marvel blockbuster with Eternals.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s involvement in the Buffy sequel is not something to be taken for granted. In fact, she was the one who was against it until a few years ago. Therefore, her change of heart is relatively recent.

Joss Whedon Apparently Not Involved
However, the absence of Joss Whedon is conspicuous. After all, he is the creator of the Buffy series, having previously also made a Buffy film – back then with Kristy Swanson in the title role. Whedon enjoyed an established reputation in Hollywood for a long time and even directed the first two Avengers films for Marvel. However, in 2021, serious allegations surfaced against the filmmaker. He is said to have created a toxic working environment and behaved badly on Buffy and the spin-off series Angel.
Incidentally, this is not the first attempt at a new Buffy project. The last attempt to bring forward a new edition was in 2018. At that time, the lead role was intended for a Black actress. However, the project never came to fruition.

There is no date yet for the Buffy sequel. It is also not yet known whether other stars from back then will return. The original series remains highly popular today and is frequently cited as one of the greatest TV series of all time. Its legacy also extends to other films and series. For example, it is alluded to several times in The Big Bang Theory and Buffy stars such as Eliza Dushku and Sarah Michelle Gellar have made guest appearances.
