Even though not much is known about the new “Harry Potter” series, preparations are in full swing. Of particular interest to many is the casting.
After a long period of quiet around Warner’s Harry Potter series, rumors and news are currently coming thick and fast. One question that interests many is the new cast of the series reboot. After all, the films based on the successful books are not that old. However, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have shaped an entire generation with their portrayal of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. That’s why many people are now interested in who will follow in their footsteps and those of the other actors. Now, for the first time, there are more precise rumors.
Rumors About the Casting of Severus Snape
Casting for the Harry Potter series has been underway since the late summer of 2024. As this is a reboot of the films or a new adaptation of the main series by J. K. Rowling, it is also known which roles are to be cast. According to showrunner Francesca Gardiner, the demand is high. As she stated in an interview with the industry magazine Deadline, more than 30,000 young actors have auditioned for the three main roles alone – Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
Equally important as the casting of the magical trio are the numerous other leading roles, such as the teachers at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the films, for example, the late British actor Alan Rickman took on the role of the gloomy potions teacher Severus Snape. Paapa Essiedu, known for roles in Gangs of London, I May Destroy You, and The Outrun is currently in talks about playing this character.
Who Will Play Albus Dumbledore?
There have also been many rumors about the casting of Principal Albus Dumbledore. Originally, one name was considered the favorite for the role: Jared Harris. This is partly due to the actor’s resume, which includes his role in the HBO series Chernobyl, among other achievements. On the other hand, his family background also plays a role. Jared Harris is none other than the son of the late Richard Harris. He played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films. Michael Gambon then took over the role.
However, Jared Harris clearly rejected the project. Since then, two names, in particular, have been circulating: Mark Rylance and Mark Strong. Rylance received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for his role in Bridge of Spies. However, the actor is also known for his numerous theater roles. Strong, on the other hand, is probably best known for films such as Kingsman, Shazam! and Kickass.

However, the series of casting rumors is not over yet. Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes himself brought up an exciting name for his successor: Cillian Murphy. According to the actor and many fans, the Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer star would be a good choice for the antagonist.
Casting for the roles of Minerva McGonagall and Rubeus Hagrid for the Harry Potter series also seems to be underway in the background. The teacher of energetic transformation was played in the films by the recently deceased Maggie Smith. Rachel Weisz, known for The Mummy and The Favourite, and Sharon Horgan, known for Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Bad Sisters, are currently being touted as her successors. Brett Goldstein, notably from Ted Lasso, could take on the role of gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid—an important casting choice, as Hagrid is an audience favorite. The actor in the films, Robbie Coltrane, has also already passed away.
None of these casts have been confirmed yet. In general, HBO and Warner are keeping a very low profile when it comes to planning. But the interest of fans is enormous. The casting rumors listed are probably also the cause of lively debate.
