Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw are currently shaking up the Netflix charts together as a spy and a contract killer, respectively. But is that reason enough for a sequel to the series “Black Doves”?
A series currently dominates Netflix’s charts: Black Doves. The thriller series not only stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. Critics and viewers alike are praising the stellar performances, captivating setting, engaging dialogue, and thrilling action scenes. Even before the start of the season, it was clear that Netflix would be making a sequel. The series’ success seems to justify Netflix’s decision, yet the question remains: is a second season truly necessary?
‘Black Doves’ Gets Off to a Rousing Start on Netflix
The title Black Doves refers to a clandestine organization trading in secrets. Helen Webb (Knightley) is part of this organization. As the wife of the British Minister of Defense, she comes into contact with a lot of explosive information, which the Black Doves then sell to the highest bidder. However, her world unravels when her lover, Jason Davies (Andrew Koji), is shot dead in what appears to be a contract killing. This incident compels her boss, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), to take action.
She then brings back Sam Young (Ben Whishaw), a hitman who has actually gone into hiding. Sam and Helen are old friends, but he is taking a big risk with his return. He soon finds himself haunted by his past, both from his ex-boyfriend and a botched job. Then there’s a dead ambassador, alienated friendships, and, of course, Helen’s husband and their two children, who have no idea that they are living with a spy.
This potent mix has evidently resonated strongly with Netflix audiences. According to the website Flixpatrol, the series topped the charts in more than 54 countries. These include important markets such as the USA, the UK, and Germany.
Sequel Already Greenlit
Fans have taken to social networks to express their relief that a sequel is already in the works. For some, this was even the explicit reason for watching the series in the first place. Netflix announced in August 2024, almost four months before the start of the series, that it wanted to produce a second season of Black Doves.
This is a tactic that other streaming services have also used recently. Prime Video, for example, decided well before the start of the series Citadel that it wanted to build an entire franchise out of it. Netflix also announced long-term plans for series such as The Witcher. The streaming service adopts this approach only for the series it holds in high regard. Normally, however, the provider waits a few weeks before deciding on a sequel.

Is ‘Black Doves’ season 2 a good idea?
Details about Black Doves season 2, however, remain scarce. Production has yet to commence. Nonetheless, series creator Joe Barton is already brimming with ideas. One intriguing idea reportedly involves a shift in the season’s backdrop. Given Season 1 is set against the festive backdrop of Christmas, it naturally aligns with the winter season. Plans are also in place to delve deeper into the lives of the already-introduced characters. Both Helen and Sam harbor a mysterious past that has been alluded to throughout the series. Additionally, new adversaries are set to intersect with the duo’s journey.
