Amazon has long kept a low profile regarding its prestigious and, above all, expensive “Lord of the Rings” series. However, it is now certain that there will be a 3rd season of “The Rings of Power.” What is already known?
The Lord of the Rings is one of the most influential franchises in the world. This is partly due to J. R. R. Tolkien’s original book but also to the extremely successful film adaptation by Peter Jackson. Amazon aims to build on this success with its Prime Video series The Rings of Power, though it has achieved only moderate success to date. This is despite the fact that the streaming service has already invested astronomical sums in the production. The viewership numbers for Season 2, which premiered in 2024, were disappointingly low. The provider repeatedly formulated the goal of producing a total of five seasons. However, given the viewership numbers, it was uncertain whether this goal would be achieved. Nevertheless, Amazon has now officially announced The Rings of Power season 3. And the first details about the content are already known. TECHBOOK summarizes all the rumors and information.

When Is “The Rings of Power” Season 3 Coming?
The start of the third season of The Rings of Power is still a long way off. However, filming is due to start soon. Filming is slated to begin in spring 2025. Amazon announced this in an official press release in mid-February.
If you look at the production period to date, it took around two years for season 2. Experts, therefore, expect the new episodes to be available on Prime Video at the beginning of 2027 or at the end of 2026 at the earliest. Amazon is likely to aim for a weekly release schedule following an initial larger block of episodes.
The Plot of the New Episodes
Amazon has already revealed a little about the content of The Rings of Power season 3 – and announced an important change. The storyline is expected to leap forward several years. This means that it will not tie in directly with the dramatic events from season 2. Attention: Below are some spoilers from the previous plot.
The Elves and the One Ring
Recently, the situation has appeared dire for the free peoples of Middle-earth. The Elven kingdom of Eregion has fallen, and Sauron has managed to escape to Mordor with a few rings of power. As the makers of the series have not stuck exactly to the original here, they could, of course, deviate even further from Tolkien’s work in the future.

Season 3 of The Rings of Power will finally be about the one ring. This actually already exists at the fall of Eregion. However, as the makers have actually condensed large periods of the original to avoid dramaturgical problems and simplify the sometimes interwoven plot, this has been saved for further episodes.
These are to be set at the climax of the war between Sauron and the elves. However, Amazon has not revealed how big the time jump will be. The time jump is, however, expected to be moderate to accommodate the aging of the non-elven and non-magical protagonists. Otherwise, they would have to age significantly, which series productions often want to avoid.
What Will Happen to Númenor and Elendil?
The aging process would be difficult for the many important human characters, some of whom we know from the original will still be important. First and foremost, of course, are Isildur and his father, Elendil. The former is still believed to be dead in his homeland of Númenor. At the same time, the island kingdom is confronted with a power struggle.

On the one hand, there is the blind Queen Míriel, who seems to have resigned herself to fate. On the other hand, Pharazon is plotting against her and her allies and accuses them of making a pact with Sauron. At the end of season 2, Elendil flees with his new sword Narsil. Lord of the Rings fans know, of course, how important this sword will become. What happens next with Elendil and Númenor is likely to be a key element for The Rings of Power Season 3. After all, the island kingdom has yet to fall dramatically according to Míriel’s vision (and Tolkien’s template).
In addition, Elendil is now searching for his son Anárion, Isildur’s brother. He will later become the king of Gondor and is, therefore, also an important character. So, could viewers be in for an emotional reunion in the new episodes?
Dwarves, Halflings – and Gandalf!
Things got particularly dramatic in the dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dûm. There, viewers were able to see for the first time exactly how the rings unfold their power and corrupt a person. In the end, King Durin III wakes the Balrog and sacrifices himself to stop him. But what happens now with the dwarves and, above all, of course, with Prince Durin and his wife Disa? This is likely to be an important element of The Rings of Power season 3 – if only because they are audience favorites.

However, it remains to be seen where the plot surrounding the halflings Nori and Poppy will lead. The two have come across another group of halflings who are apparently on a quest for the Shire. It will be much more interesting to see if they meet the stranger again, whose identity has finally been revealed.
It is indeed the wizard Gandalf, who has also received his staff directly from Bombadil. Even if Amazon has taken a few liberties here compared to Tolkien’s original, this character should remain important.

The same could apply to the dark wizard who appeared in season 2. However, those familiar with the original know that Gandalf should actually meet Círdan, the old Elf. He then receives his ring of power from him.
