Acclaimed history series surprisingly discontinued

Streaming services measure the success of their series productions by several parameters. Are the reviews good? And above all, are the viewing figures right? The latter, in particular, does not seem to have been the case with one promising series, which is why it was immediately taken off Prime Video – despite good reviews.

One might wonder why certain series continue to be renewed for additional seasons long after losing their initial charm. The answer is usually quite simple: because there are still enough people who watch them. This is typically gauged by television ratings or streaming metrics. With streaming services such as Netflix, there is also the subscription factor. Original productions must continually draw in new audiences to secure fresh subscriptions. This is where My Lady Jane seems to have failed on Amazon Prime Video – to the chagrin of many fans, as the series received extremely positive reviews.

Amazon cancels “My Lady Jane” after just one season

As the streaming service announced just a few weeks after the start of the series, there will be no second season of My Lady Jane. This cancellation comes as a surprise, given the series’ numerous positive reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently has a score of 94 (as of August 19, 2024), while the audience rating is also very good at 81. IMDb also currently has a rating of 7.4, with almost 30 percent of reviewers even giving it ten out of ten stars. My Lady Jane has cultivated a dedicated fanbase in a remarkably short period.

Apparently, however, this was not enough for Amazon to order a sequel to the series. Fans will have to make do with the eight episodes that have been released so far.

Petition launched against cancellation

Many fans are expressing their displeasure about this on social networks. The chemistry between the two main actors, Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, in particular, had won over the audience.

And there is also tangible resistance to the cancellation of My Lady Jane. A petition on Change.org has already collected a few thousand signatures. Yet, it will likely require much more to sway Amazon to heed these calls. In the past, however, such fan campaigns have been successful.

For example, the elaborate Netflix series Sense8 was given a final season after it was actually supposed to be canceled without replacement and with an open ending. Lucifer was also able to continue, thanks to the efforts of its fans. The outcry after the cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine was particularly strong. The outcome was the production of three additional seasons. Another particularly prominent example is Family Guy. After DVD sales went through the roof following its cancellation, the broadcaster relented in 2005 – the series is still running today.

This is what the series “My Lady Jane” is about

Whether the petition can actually change anything about the cancellation of the Amazon series is questionable. My Lady Jane presents a vibrant blend of historical backdrop and sharp humor that appeals to a wide audience.

The series is based on the historical figure of the same name, who also went down in the history books as the Nine-Day Queen. To explain: after the infamous King Henry VIII (also known to series fans from productions such as The Tudors) died, his only legitimate son, Edward VI, succeeded to the throne, but he died young. Henry VIII appointed his daughter Mary I, later known as “Bloody Mary,” as his second heir in his will. However, another woman laid claim to the English throne at the time: Lady Jane Grey. As the daughter of Mary Tudor, King Henry VIII’s sister, she also had a right to the crown.

What ended bloodily in reality after just a few days – Jane was beheaded – looks somewhat different in the series, however. My Lady Jane turns the young woman into a headstrong rebel who fights for her rights and against an arranged marriage.
