The creators of ChatGPT at OpenAI are planning their own social media platform. Behind the scenes, they are already gathering feedback on the project.
The landscape of social networks has steadily grown over the years. Today, users can choose between Facebook, Instagram, X, or TikTok, among other competitors. It’s not uncommon for them to be registered on multiple platforms. Soon, a new name might join the list. Apparently, OpenAI is planning its own social media platform.
OpenAI Plans to Create Its Own Social Media Modeled after X
That’s according to a report by “The Verge,” citing several unnamed sources. The makers of ChatGPT at OpenAI are reportedly pursuing their own social media project, which is still in its early stages. Company CEO Sam Altman is already privately seeking opinions from outsiders.
There aren’t many details available at the moment. However, it’s said that OpenAI’s social media will be modeled after X (formerly Twitter). This would initially mean that the focus would be on short messages. A prototype reportedly already exists, centered around the new image generator from ChatGPT, with a social feed attached.
Merging AI and Social Media Offers Particular Advantages
From the start, a social media platform supported by AI could offer several advantages to users and businesses. Artificial intelligence could help users spread better content more effectively. Insiders also cite X as a model, where the chatbot Grok is integrated to enable users to create viral posts. Other companies are reportedly “very envious” of this.
At the same time, the many user interactions with OpenAI’s social media portal would provide the company with unique real-time data. This data can be used to further train the AI. X and Meta are already handling it this way.

The collection and use of numerous user data would make sense for OpenAI and keep the ChatGPT makers’ AI competitive against rivals. At the same time, CEO Altman has previously engaged in public spats with X owner Elon Musk and Meta.
For instance, Musk once made an unsolicited offer to acquire OpenAI for $97.4 billion. Altman declined but offered to buy Twitter from Musk for $9.74 billion. Additionally, when Meta announced plans to develop a ChatGPT rival, Altman remarked that they could now also create social media in return.
Whether OpenAI’s social media portal will ever become a reality is currently uncertain. It is also unknown whether it will be a standalone app or integrated into ChatGPT.
