Apple has unveiled its new smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 10. It brings some new features, but there had already been speculation in advance that the anniversary device might fall short of expectations.
In October 2023, Apple unveiled the Watch Series 9, the latest generation of smartwatches. Compared to its predecessors, there was little new to report. This led many to speculate that Apple was saving its powder for the Apple Watch 10 – after all, it is an anniversary edition. Now, the company has unveiled its new smartwatch at the Apple keynote.
Overview
New functions for the Apple Watch 10
After the smaller leaps between Apple Watch 8 and 9, the company now wants to make bigger changes. This is probably partly due to the magic number ten – but also to the recent decline in sales figures. In 2024, an Apple Watch will, therefore, apparently be launched on the market that stands out more clearly from its predecessor models, both visually and in terms of its functions.
One of the rumors about new functions was confirmed at the Apple keynote. The Apple Watch 10 can actually detect sleep apnea and warn you accordingly. According to Apple, 80 percent of sleep apnea cases are still not detected. However, based on a 30-day breathing analysis, the Apple Watch Series 10 (as it is officially called) will be able to evaluate and provide data in the future – including for a possible consultation with a doctor. FDA approval is still pending and is expected in the fall. The Apple Watch Series 9 and the Watch Ultra 2 are also set to receive the feature.
What was not announced, however, was a function for measuring blood pressure. There were also various hints about the new features of watchOS, including the new app for vital functions. We provide a comprehensive overview of watchOS 11 in a separate article.
S10 chip brings little new
Apple always names its SiP (System in a Package), the mini mainboard of the smartwatch, to match the current generation. Accordingly, the new S10 chip is installed in the Watch 10. While the design has changed quite a bit, the SiP has not. As the S9 chip installed in the Series 9, which is based on a four-nanometer architecture, already represented a significant upgrade in terms of performance, Apple is sticking with it for the time being.
However, the new chip should be able to filter background noise better in order to improve phone quality. The chip is also faster and more intelligent. The Apple Watch 10 also has a battery life of 18 hours.
Design of the Apple Watch 10
There was a lot of speculation beforehand as to whether the design of the new Apple Watch would live up to its anniversary status. And indeed, it does. The Apple Watch Series 10 has the largest display of any smartwatch Apple has ever released. Compared to its predecessor, the Apple Watch 10 makes a leap of 30 percent.
The entire design is also rounder and softer. This is also possible thanks to the Ion-X glass used in the display. Apple has also installed the first wide-angle OLED display on its smartwatches. This improves visibility from different viewing angles. The display is also updated once per second in Always-on mode, which is beneficial for the animated hand on the watch face.
At 9.7 mm, the Apple Watch 10 is also the thinnest of all Apple Watches. Apple speaks of a reduction of around 10 percent. To achieve this, various components had to be made smaller and, in some cases, newly developed. This has also led to an upgrade of the speaker and microphone.
Thanks to the new titanium case, the Apple Watch Series 10 is also lighter than previous models. In addition to titanium, an aluminum version is also coming onto the market. As a result, stainless steel has been completely phased out. The charging speed has also increased again. Apple claims an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes.
