The Apple event in September is also known as the “iPhone” event. This is where Apple presents the next generation of iPhones every year. However, this year’s keynote will probably go far beyond that again.

After weeks of anticipation, Apple has officially sent out invitations for its September event. As expected, everything will revolve around the upcoming iPhone 16, which will probably go on sale at the end of September. However, the American tech giant is also expected to unveil a slew of additional products. TECHBOOK discloses which products these are and shares the details that are already known about each device.

Apple Event 2024 will take place on September 9

On August 26, Apple officially published the invitation to its event in September. The announcement came with an unexpected twist. Instead of taking place on a Tuesday as usual in previous years, the Apple Event 2024 will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024. Some experts had already speculated about this postponement. This is because the TV duel between the two presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, will take place on September 10. Apple likely aims to avoid a scheduling conflict with this high-profile event.

As usual, the event will take place at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino in front of a limited audience. However, a stream will be available to the global public from 7 pm. For additional insights on the Apple event on the evening of September 9, you can tune into our annual TECHBOOK live ticker.

Incidentally, this year’s motto is “It’s Glowtime” (probably in reference to the famous saying “It’s Showtime”). However, we won’t be able to say exactly what the “Glow” refers to until after the Apple Event 2024.

iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 is poised to be the evening’s showstopper. As in the previous year, 2023, an iPhone 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max are expected in addition to the “normal” iPhone 16. If Apple remains true to its previous course – and many assume it will – then many earlier innovations previously reserved for the Pro models will now be included in the basic version.

The iPhone 16 will, therefore, probably get a new chip and the so-called action button. The camera is also set to make a leap in performance. The iPhone Pro models will probably experience further development, particularly in size.

However, Apple’s proprietary AI, dubbed Apple Intelligence, is expected to be the standout innovation. This feature is widely anticipated to be introduced with the iOS 18.1 update in October. However, Apple will most likely say something about it at its 2024 event and, above all, about its integration in the iPhone 16.

iOS 18

What would the iPhone be without its iOS operating system? And thanks to the WWDC in June and the beta versions, a lot is already known about the upcoming iOS 18. Among other things, the entire control center will be more flexible and individual. The same applies to the app icons on the home screen – a customization that Apple users have long wished for with regard to Android.

There will also be a gaming mode, and the Photos app will undergo a comprehensive redesign. The same applies to iMessage, Apple’s in-house messaging app, which only works to a limited extent when communicating with other services of its kind. Apple wants to change this with iOS 18. We have summarized all the new features of the upcoming operating system in a separate article. There are also some hidden functions in iOS 18 that are not immediately obvious.

Apple Watch Series 10/X and Ultra 3

In addition to iPhones, Apple’s smartwatch, the Apple Watch, is also very popular. In 2023, Apple introduced the Watch Series 9 and the 2nd generation of its Watch Ultra. A sequel is also expected for both series at the Apple Event 2024.

However, the Apple Watch Series 10 (or X), in particular, could be disappointing. Disappointing in the sense that Apple is holding back on innovations despite the anniversary number. Both models are set to be larger and slightly faster. It remains to be seen whether the long-awaited sleep apnea tracking function will finally arrive. The same applies to the blood pressure function. It is also questionable how detailed the values it can provide are. Read more about this in our Apple Watch 10/X review. The innovations for the premium smartwatch Apple Watch Ultra 3 are similarly meager.

Otherwise, Apple has already presented the new Vitals app and a “Training Load” function at WWDC. These are to come to both the Apple Watch 10/X and the Watch Ultra 3 as part of the rollout of watchOS 11, Apple’s smartwatch operating system. The system also focuses on supporting pregnant women. For example, the Apple Watch can track the menstrual cycle and certain pregnancy symptoms.

AirPods

After it had long been rumored that Apple would not unveil any new AirPods at its 2024 event, there are now other rumors. According to these, Apple plans two new models for the keynote in September to replace the AirPods 2 and 3. An update is certainly overdue. Released in 2019, the 2nd generation now offers only a fraction of the functionalities currently available. The AirPods 3 also came onto the market in 2021 and are, therefore, comparatively long in the tooth.

According to experts, Apple is planning two versions, with the higher-priced version even coming with ANC. Whether the “AirPods 4” (the name has, of course, not yet been confirmed) will come with inductive charging is also just a vague rumor.
