iOS 18.3.1 Closes Specific Security Gaps
On February 10, Apple released iOS 18.3.1 without prior fanfare. This typically indicates a focus on security updates. A look at the update notes confirms this. It mentions a vulnerability in relation to “USB Restricted Mode.”
This restricted USB mode is actually intended to keep your device secure. The feature requires a passcode to be entered when connecting mobile devices like your iPhone to a PC or other data-connected hardware via USB. Apple then prompts you to confirm if the connected device is trustworthy.
Apple states that the measures in iOS 18.3.1 aim to prevent a physical attack vector targeting this feature. The company indicates that this vulnerability could have been exploited to target individuals.
