Rumors have been circulating for some time that Apple wants to break new ground with the design of its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro. Some leaked images now show what this could look like. Not everyone is happy with what they show.

iPhone 17 Pro Could Come with a Completely New Design

The Pro models are regarded as the flagship devices within the iPhone lineup. Consequently, there’s significant interest in every aspect, including the smartphone’s aesthetics. New render images of the iPhone 17 Pro expected for fall 2025 show a modified design, particularly on the back. The images are based on CAD drawings, some of which were leaked back in January.

The images reveal an almost complete redesign of the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera section. Apple currently uses a square camera module in its Pro models, on which the lenses are arranged in a constellation of three. The iPhone 16, on the other hand, has a vertical bar with two lenses. However, both variants are positioned in the top left-hand corner of the smartphone.

Apple now seems to want to deviate from this. For the iPhone 17 Pro, the company could instead opt for a large vertical bar across the entire width of the device. The configuration of the three lenses is expected to stay the same. However, the flash, for example, moves to the far right in the images. The microphone and LiDAR sensor are positioned below it. Additionally, the images indicate that the camera bump sports a different color compared to the rest of the casing.

Apple Fans Are Not Thrilled

This, in turn, contradicts earlier rumors that Apple could rely on a general vertical arrangement of its camera lenses in the future. On platforms such as Reddit, both versions are sometimes the subject of heated debate. For instance, many have criticized the large empty space on the back if the iPhone 17 Pro were to feature the horizontal bar design. Others simply find the look ugly.

However, one Reddit user also notes that the design could solve a problem that iPhones – and other smartphones – have always had: the protruding cameras. This design quirk causes the devices to wobble when laid flat on their backs without a case. Devices such as the Google Pixel 9, which was released in 2024, therefore already rely on a wide horizontal bar.

What Should We Make of the iPhone 17 Pro Design Leak?

The new images come from the industry-renowned Jon Posser. The drawings that leaked in January came from Majin Bu, another well-known leaker. Yet, there’s no definitive way to verify the authenticity of these images. There are some experts who explicitly contradict the assessment of the new iPhone 17 Pro design. Apple Insider editor Wesley Hilliard, for example, points to the mixed success rate of Jon Posser’s predictions.

However, this does not rule out the possibility that the rendered images could actually end up showing the upcoming new design. Apple might be drawing inspiration from Google’s aforementioned competition and could be aiming to establish a new design that allows for the integration of additional camera features down the line.
