The longer you use a smartphone, the slower it becomes. But with a simple trick, you can clean up your iPhone’s RAM and make it significantly faster again.
If you’ve been using your iPhone for some time, you might notice it gradually slows down. Particularly when switching between apps or loading new ones, patience may be required. This is more pronounced with older iPhones but can also occur with newer models. The reason for this is that the iPhone stores information in the RAM each time it is used so that applications can be loaded faster later. However, apps can sometimes hang or no longer function correctly. With this simple trick, you can clean up your iPhone’s RAM and ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Clean Up iPhone RAM in Just a Few Steps
A few steps are enough to clear the iPhone’s RAM – also known as working memory. If you have an iPhone with a physical home button, you can go straight to step 4. However, newer iPhones, in particular, do not have this haptic button. Then proceed as follows:
- Go to the iPhone settings and then go to the “Accessibility” section. Under the “Touch” tab, you can activate the so-called “AssistiveTouch” function.
- To do this, tap on “AssistiveTouch” and move the slider at the top of the menu to green. You should now see a small circular area on the right-hand side of the screen that replaces the Home button.
- Tap on the circular area and then on “Home” in the menu that opens.
- Open the switch-off menu for troubleshooting by quickly pressing the volume up button and then the volume down button. Immediately afterward, press and hold the lock button until the menu opens. Important: Do not power off the iPhone using the slider afterward!
- In this view, tap the virtual AssistiveTouch button and then press and hold the Home option. For iPhone 8 or older and iPhone SE, simply press and hold the physical Home button. Then, enter your code when prompted.
If necessary, check afterward by opening apps to see if you notice an improvement in the speed and response of your iPhone.

A Full RAM Makes the iPhone Slower
Clearing the RAM can enhance performance across all tech devices. RAM is the short-term memory. It holds all the data that the device needs to access quickly. The more data is stored there, the slower the device.
A first solution is, therefore often to close running applications in the background. However, this only helps to a limited extent with a slow iPhone. Therefore, clearing the RAM can be beneficial if you’re experiencing noticeably slower performance.
