We already knew that iOS 17.6.1 was in the works. But now Apple has released its iPhone update surprisingly quickly. TECHBOOK reveals what’s in it and whether you should install it straight away.
Just a few days after the major update to iOS 17.6, Apple released the next minor update, iOS 17.6.1. Although this is only just under 350 MB in size, it contains a major bug fix.
What iOS 17.6.1 offers
The patch fixes a fairly large bug related to extended data protection. The update notes state, “This update contains important bug fixes and resolves an issue where Advanced Privacy cannot be enabled or disabled.”
It’s about the so-called “Advanced Data Protection” function. According to Apple, this is the highest level of data protection that the company can offer for its cloud security and, therefore, also an important point for Apple. After all, the company repeatedly advertises its high security standards. With the update to iOS 17.6.1, this bug has now been fixed so that users can once again set whether they want to protect part of their iCloud data using end-to-end encryption.
Users can find the function in the settings under “Apple ID.” If you scroll all the way down in this overview, you will find the “Extended data protection” tab with the corresponding note as to whether this is switched on or off.

Should you install the update straight away?
So far, there have been no reports of the update to iOS 17.6.1 causing problems. You can, therefore, install the new version with a clear conscience and should do so due to the major bug fix. Nothing is known about specific security patches in the background. Apple even specifically states that there are no corresponding CVE entries. Although the release notes mention further bug fixes, Apple has not yet provided any specific information on these.
If you don’t automatically install updates on your iPhone anyway, you can also install iOS 17.6.1 manually. To do this, go to your iPhone’s settings, select the “General” tab, and then “Software updates.” Incidentally, iPadOS 17.6.1 and macOS 14.6.1 were also released at the same time as iOS 17.6.1.
