According to insiders

Apple itself is not yet entirely convinced by this product

Anyone who has followed Apple’s recent events will know how important the company attaches to its new AI. However, insiders still see significant weaknesses in Apple Intelligence.

If you look back at Apple’s history, it is often curious. The manufacturer is rarely really a pioneer when it comes to new products or software. Nevertheless, it always manages to set trends and create the one product in an area that everyone talks about later – and that everyone wants to use. The first tablet? Not from Apple. The first smartwatch? Not by Apple, either. Nevertheless, the iPad and the Apple Watch have become almost synonymous with tablets and smartwatches. In terms of technical features, iPhones also lag behind other manufacturers’ smartphones. Nevertheless, the device is cult. The US company opened a new chapter this year with Apple Intelligence. However, opinions on this apparently differ internally.

iOS 18.1 gives the go-ahead for Apple Intelligence

Apple also introduced its first AI with iOS 18. Apple Intelligence is to be rolled out on a large scale with the update to iOS 18.1 next week – at least in countries outside the EU, especially the USA. In Germany, we will probably not see the new feature (for the time being?) due to regulations.

Apple Intelligence will make Siri smarter and better able to understand contexts. iPhones will, in the future, give their own tips on how users can use certain functions. Content from texts, emails, and the like will be scanned and presented as a summary to users. Apple’s AI offers these and other possibilities. Tim Cook himself describes the summary of email content by saying that it has “changed his life.”

Developers see the weaknesses in Apple Intelligence

On the one hand, Apple sees great potential in its AI solution and is celebrating it, as could be clearly seen at recent presentation events such as WWDC in June or the iPhone keynote at the beginning of September. However, developers are also critical internally, as Marc Gurman from Bloomberg reveals. According to him, Apple Intelligence, in its current form, is two years behind the competition. Big names in the industry – including ChatGPT – are much further ahead and would, therefore, currently offer users significant added value.

Gurman refers to statements from insiders in his report. According to them, Apple has already conducted comparative analyses between Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT. This revealed that ChatGPT was able to provide more precise answers than the new AI-supported Siri in 25 percent of cases. In fact, 30 percent of queries are said to have been answered unsatisfactorily.

Perhaps this is also the reason why Apple is only making selected functions of its in-house AI available at launch. Apple Intelligence will only become more fully usable over the coming months. Apple has, therefore, not yet given up the race for the “best AI”. The fact that the AI runs on the manufacturer’s prominent devices and that it is also financially well-positioned to drive development forward plays into the company’s hands.
