Amazon offers a whole range of different e-book readers. The manufacturer presented new models just a few days ago. However, shortly after this presentation, the company confirmed that a popular Kindle model was disappearing from the market.

The Kindle, the Paperwhite and the Oasis, or the Colorsoft and the Scribe, if you prefer something more specialized, are all e-book readers from Amazon. The models sometimes offer very different features, with the manufacturer aiming to meet different customer requirements. Now that well-known eReaders such as the Paperwhite have recently been upgraded, Amazon is taking a critical look at its models and eliminating one that has apparently become superfluous.

Former high-end model is being scrapped

We are talking about the Kindle Oasis, which was previously considered the high-end model among the manufacturer’s classic e-book readers. Since its launch in April 2016, Amazon has brought a total of three generations of the Kindle Oasis onto the market. The last one was launched in July 2019 and has, therefore, been on the market for five years. And it really is set to be the last generation, as Amazon has now confirmed to TECHBOOK.

“As soon as the current stock of the Kindle Oasis is sold out online and in stores, we will no longer offer the device,” said a spokesperson in response to our inquiry. Over the years, Amazon has transferred many of the previously exclusive features of the Kindle Oasis to other models, making it simply redundant. “With the new Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite models, the redesigned Kindle Scribe, and the Kindle Colorsoft, our first Kindle with a color display, our new portfolio offers customers many options. We’re confident they’ll find a model they like.”

Kindle Oasis is no longer up to date

Indeed, As mentioned at the beginning, the Oasis was long regarded as the high-end product in the Kindle segment. Not only did it offer an incredibly compact and slim design, the e-ink display with 10 LEDs and 300 ppi was also a special feature at the time of its launch. Amazon has repeatedly adapted the Kindle Oasis up to the most recently released model. For example, it was given a larger 7-inch display, more memory, and better lighting. However, the features are no longer anything special.

On the contrary, the majority of Amazon’s current Kindle product portfolio now offers similar, if not better, features. Even the basic Kindle has a 300 ppi display, more memory and a more modern USB-C port. The Oasis has, therefore, had its day.

More on the topic

However, there was one detail that was exclusive to the Oasis – and this will not be carried over to any of the existing Kindle models. We are talking about the buttons that can be used in addition to touch operation to scroll through the e-books.

Today, all of Amazon’s current eReaders are designed for touch operation. Buttons are a relic from earlier years, from the times before touch displays on e-book readers. The Kindle Oasis offered this function in conjunction with its special design concept. This consisted of a high-quality aluminum housing in a very slim design with a slightly thicker side for holding, on which the two scroll buttons were located.

Today, however, users have become accustomed to touch operation and, according to Amazon, handle it effortlessly. The exclusive feature that the Kindle Oasis still has is therefore hardly in demand any more.
