After years on the market, LG’s Blu-ray players are slowly but surely disappearing. Production is now being discontinued for good. TECHBOOK explains what this means in detail.
The market for optical media continues to decline, and it will become increasingly difficult for fans of the disks in the future. The supply of content on physical media is shrinking, as is that of the associated hardware. Those who remain loyal to them now have to cope with further bad news: Blu-ray players from LG will disappear in the long term. The company is discontinuing its production.
Blu-Ray Players From LG Will No Longer Be Available
This is according to a new report from FlatpanelsHD. According to the report, LG has removed its Blu-ray players from the range and stopped production. Various unnamed sources are said to have confirmed this decision. However, a look at the official LG store also shows that no product is listed as available in the “Blu-ray & DVD Players” section.
This, therefore, also includes the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD models that have been widely available to date. It is also stated that, with immediate effect, only the remaining stocks will be sold, after which the sale will be discontinued.

Small Glimmer of Hope Remains for Blu-Ray Fans
LG has not launched a new Blu-ray player on the market since 2018. The same applies to remaining competitors in this segment, such as Panasonic and Sony. However, the latter wants to discontinue the production of Blu-ray completely in the long term.
LG is not just another company leaving the player business. Oppo took the same step back in 2018, followed by Samsung in 2019. LG, Samsung, and Sony were also once members of the Blu-ray Disc Association. The association promoted the development and market launch of the blue disc.
In a statement, however, LG is said not to have confirmed the complete global exit from the market. This would mean that the South Korean company would at least like to keep open the possibility of resuming the production of Blu-ray players in the future. However, this would first require an increase in demand.
