Once again this year, the Opening Night Live opens Gamescom in Cologne. Gaming fans can look forward to many new trailers. Some studios will also be showing images of their latest titles for the first time. TECHBOOK will be there to report live from the event.
The Opening Night Live – ONL for short – is a firm institution at Gamescom. On the evening before the first day of the trade fair, which is usually reserved for trade visitors, the big trailer show heralds the start of the event. Part of the program can already be seen in advance. TECHBOOK reveals the highlights the audience can look forward to.
Opening Night Live opens Gamescom 2024
Gamescom, now one of the largest games fairs in the world, has been taking place since 2009. The opening Opening Night Live looks back on a shorter history; the show first took place in its current form in 2019. During the coronavirus pandemic, it was an online-only event, but the program is now taking place in front of a live audience again. This will also be the case at Gamescom 2024 – TECHBOOK editor Marlene Polywka will be attending the event live on the evening of August 20. As always, there will be plenty of game trailers and gameplay videos.
The pre-show will start at 7.30 pm at the exhibition grounds in Cologne. The actual Opening Night Live 2024 will then begin at 8.00 pm. As always, the show, which is expected to last just under two hours, will also be streamed live. This can be found on the event website or via the usual channels on YouTube and Twitch.
As in previous years, Geoff Keighley will act as presenter. The Canadian video game journalist is known for hosting the Game Awards and the Summer Game Festival, among other things.

These games are already confirmed for Opening Night Live 2024
Even though the organizers are certainly saving some surprises for the show itself, some titles have already been leaked in advance, as always. What the respective studios will be showing exactly, however, is not known in detail in advance. The following games are expected for this year’s ONL (in the order presented):
- Borderlands 4: The fact that the loot shooter is getting another part is definitely news! Unfortunately, the trailer was quite short and doesn’t reveal much more than the fact that a new game is coming.
- Call of Duty Black Ops 6: As usual, CoD gets a big stage at ONL and plenty of time for a gameplay video.
- Goat Simulator Remastered: The trailer full of innuendos was definitely a highlight. Many people should also be happy that the game will be released in 2024.
- Dying Light: The Beast
- Black Myth: Wukong
- Dragon Ball Sparking! zero
- King of Meat
- Lost Records: Bloom and Rage: The trailer for the new game from the makers of Life is Strange is definitely very atmospheric. The game is scheduled to be released on February 18, 2025.
- No More Room in Hell 2
- Arc Raiders: According to the ONL trailer, the shooter probably won’t be free-to-play after all!
- Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
- Path of Exile 2: The trailer provided some gameplay insights and, above all, the early access release on November 15.
- Dune Awakening: The trailer for one of the most eagerly awaited games at ONL shows impressive images of the desert planet Arrakis and also some gameplay.
- Reanimal: It is now known that the makers of Little Nightmares (parts 1 and 2) are working on a very dark game again, but it looks quite promising in the trailer.
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Many were looking forward to new insights into the Capcom game. The trailer mainly shows gameplay and some action-packed monster fights – after all, that’s what the games are all about.
- Monument Valley 3
- Civilization 7: The applause was huge when it was finally Civ 7’s turn. The trailer also goes into the importance of the video game masterpiece and also reveals that the title is scheduled to be released on February 11, 2025.
- Starfield: Rev-8
- Marvel Rivals
- Secret Level: This was the only non-game at Opening Night Live 2024. But of course there is also a gaming reference here, as it is a video game film, which, however, differs significantly from the previous titles. Secret Level is an anthology series that devotes an episode to well-known video game franchises and tells stories from the respective game world. It was a cool concept that was also well received locally – as was director Tim Miller’s emotional performance. The series is scheduled to run on Prime Video from December 10, 2024.
- Towerborne
- Age of Mythology Retold
- Delta Force: Hawk Ops
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: There is also new gameplay for the upcoming medieval adventure, which once again shows how detailed the game world is. The start date is scheduled for February 11, 2025.
- Batman: Arkham Shadow
- Little Nightmares 3: Many are still curious to see whether the new makers can build on the magic of the first parts. The trailer is definitely promising and shows the interaction between the two characters.
- Herdling
- Masters of Albion: This game is probably one of the biggest surprises of the evening. Not only is Peter Molyneux personally on stage, but he is also announcing a completely new game and has brought together many well-known names who have already worked with him on successful titles like Fable.
- Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred: Blizzard is back at Gamescom!
- World of Warcraft: The War Within
- Squid Game: Unleashed
- Unknown: Awakening
- The First Berserker: Khazan
- Ara: History Untold
- Dark and Darker Mobile
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Finally, there is a start date of December 9, 2024. Many had expected an earlier release. The trailer looks good, though.
- Mafia: The Old Country: Finally, a new Mafia part was announced. Very few people actually expected that. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t show much yet – more information will follow in December.
Presenter Geoff Keighley has also already given some hints about the games on show. Among other things, a teaser entitled “The Beast is Coming” will be shown on Opening Night Live. This is presumably a new title from British developer Flavourworks.
