The latest Nintendo Direct was mainly about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its games. Mario Kart World” was also presented — along with a hefty price tag.
The cat is finally out of the bag. Now, gamers around the world know when the Nintendo Switch 2 will be launched and how much it will cost. The new hybrid console will be a major technical upgrade to its predecessor. Moreover, an impressive game line-up has already been confirmed. However, fans will sometimes have to dig deep into their pockets — especially for Mario Kart World.
“Mario Kart World” Will Cost 90 Euros
At yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, which took place on April 2, 2025, the traditional manufacturer had a wealth of information and exciting trailers in store. Interested parties were given a closer look at Mario Kart World. This is the latest installment in the legendary fun racer series from Nintendo.
A new Mario Kart has always been an event. And its predecessor, Mario Kart 8, is one of the most successful video games ever, with more than 64 million units sold. Expectations for Mario Kart World are likely to be correspondingly high – just like the price. As part of the presentation, Nintendo also announced a hefty retail price. Players will pay 79.99 euros for the digital version and a whopping 89.99 euros for the physical version.

“GTA 6” could drive prices for video games even higher

New Nintendo Switch to be surprisingly expensive

Old Technology That Is Now Really Valuable
“Mario Kart World” Beats “GTA 6” on Price
It is not yet known whether the investment is worth it at all. But if previous games are anything to go by, then nothing less than the next masterpiece is waiting in the wings. Nevertheless, 90 euros is not only steep but also outrageous in the truest sense of the word.
While similar or much higher prices have been asked for special collector’s editions in the past, this has not been the case for the standard versions. At 90 euros, Nintendo is unexpectedly raising the bar for the general price level. And with this, Mario Kart World even precedes the upcoming monster release of GTA 6.
Analyst Matthew Ball, for example, previously speculated that the new AAA title from Rockstar would raise sales prices. He assumed a range of possibly 90 to 100 euros. In theory, GTA 6 could still break the 100-euro mark when the game is released. But Nintendo has now definitely made its move. At the same time, the company has exceeded previous price forecasts, which were still talking about 80 euros — in exceptional cases. Only time will tell whether the price of Mario Kart World will remain an exception or whether it will set off a general price trend.
